Telling it like it is

I’ve been complaining for decades (really) that Israel has the worst public relations imaginable. While the PLO practically held reporters hostage to tell the story with the PLO spin, the Israelis always responded with a tight-lipped military spokesman. Israel might never have prevailed against the Leftist forces arrayed against her, both at the level of nations and those nations’ media outlets, but she sure didn’t help herself by making it almost impossible for reporters to tell a sympathetic story about Israel. Right now, pro-Israel bloggers, not to mention Israeli bloggers, are trying to tell her story, but it’s really time that Israel herself does some of the heavy PR lifting.

I’m not the only one thinking this. A public relations expert and military historian named Ned Barnett has had the same thoughts, and writes about them compellingly here. If he were the Israeli spokesperson trying to communicate the Israeli experience to the West, he wouldn’t waffle in technical military language about air assaults with Katyushas, he’d say this:

As of July 23rd, Hezbollah has fired more than 2,000 high-explosive war rockets at peaceful, innocent civilian neighborhoods in Israel. How would America feel – how would America respond – if cross-border terrorists (hiding among civilians in a neighboring country) had fired 2,000 high-explosive war rockets into San Diego, or El Paso? How would America react if Atlanta or Kansas City or Denver came under such a sustained, murderous attack? In the face of such horrific provocation – a cycle that was started when Hezbollah terrorists crossed the border and kidnapped two soldiers – would America be exercising near-miraculous self-restraint? Or would America seek out these terrorists – giving them no safe haven – if only to make sure that no more high-explosive war rockets were fired into the neighborhoods of peaceful American cities? The answer is clear – Americans would fight to defend their homeland and destroy the terrorists, the terrorists’ bases of operations, and those who support or shelter those terrorists.

So simple, so obvious, so alien to the Israeli psyche.

UPDATE: In a comment, Dagon pointed to a website that has Ariel Sharon telling Shimon Peres that the Jewish people control America. This sounded unlikely, so I checked it out. It turns out, this purported “quotation” falls into the same category as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion — it’s a canard aimed at discrediting the State of Israel and demonizing the Jewish people:

In a May 10, 2002 column (“Now Isn’t the Time for Bush League Moves”), nationally-syndicated columnist Georgie Anne Geyer included bogus and inflammatory allegations against Prime Minister Sharon and Israel’s supporters in America.First, she wrote:

In fact, it [American support for Israel’s actions] led Prime Minister Sharon to tell his Cabinet recently, “I control America.”

CAMERA conducted extensive Nexis and Internet searches, and found that no mainstream news organization reported as true the fabricated quotation. The hoax originated with an October 3, 2001 press release from the pro-Hamas group, the Islamic Association for Palestine. It said:

An acrimonious argument erupted during the Israeli cabinet weekly session last week between Ariel Sharon and his foreign Minister Shimon Peres during which Sharon reportedly yelled at Peres, saying “don’t worry about American pressure, we control America.”

Notably, in the same press release, the direct quotation “we control America” changed to “we the Jewish people control America.” IAP wrote:

According [to] the Israeli Hebrew radio, Col [sic] Yisrael Wednesday, Peres warned Sharon that refusing to heed incessant American requests for a cease-fire with the Palestinians would endanger Israeli interests and turn the US against us. At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying “…I want to tell you something clear, don’t worry about American pressure on Israel, we the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it.”

According to the IAP press release, the statement was reported on Kol Yisrael. However, CAMERA’s calls to Kol Yisrael confirmed that no such broadcast occurred.

Geyer’s second problematic claim was:

Look at U.S. television: One minute, you see pro-Israeli ads saying the Arabs are all dogs…

However, here too investigation turned up no evidence that any such ad ever appeared on U.S. television.

Since the Sharon “quotation” and the “Arabs are dogs” ad are preposterous on their face, one would have expected Geyer (and editors who publish her column) to verify their accuracy before including such inflammatory statements in her column.

Geyer’s piece, which is syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate, is known to have appeared in the Chicago Tribune and the San Diego Union Tribune.

The anti-Israel crowd tends to have the same problem the anti-George Bush crowd has. One it suits their purposes, George Bush and the Israeli leaders are evil geniuses, manipulating the world at large to carry out their nefarious schemes. And when it suits their purposes, George Bush and Israeli leaders are buffoons, incapable of intelligent thought or expression. Eventually, you have to take your pick, becausae both ideas don’t exist in the same universe. And in my universe, Ariel Sharon was way to smart to say something that profoundly stupid and counterproductive.

UPDATE II:  DQ reminded me of a time when Israel lucidly presented its case.  Read this masterful speech that Abba Eban gave to the UN Security Council during the 1967 War.  It humanizes Israel’s story, and contains a compelling logic that makes it easy to understand Israel’s actions then.  I wish there were such a prominent spokesman now.

  1. Replace Israel with Bush, and it’s the same story. Propaganda was sourced primarily from Greek forms of oration and demagoguery. Back in those days, moving a crowd counted, because numbers was all that mattered in a democracy. Now a days, with our representative republic, wiser heads have prevailed. We no longer have the mistaken belief that a vote of the majority can send someone to their deaths, ala Socrates.

While the system has improved and wiser heads have acquired power. At the same time, the populists, the descendents of Greek orators and demagogues, have taken advantage of the fact that representative republics do not appeal to mass emotion. There’s this power gap, this gap in the human mind, that is filled by enemy propaganda as well as propaganda from the Left.

They got there first, and it is always hard to dislodge someone from a defensive position.

What separates America from Israel, is my view that America would not be acting anywhere close to how Israel is acting now, if America had suffered terroist strikes for several decades from across the border in Cnaada or Mexico.

  2. OK, I have to ask. How do you think America would be acting?

  3. Back in the 1980s, I think it was, I attended a “debate” between G. Gordon Liddy and a representative of the PLO, hosted by a Utah university. I walked away scared of being in the same room with Liddy, and wanting to take the PLO guy out to dinner. It took a while to figure out that I was scared of Liddy because he described in some detail what Middle East terror groups did to people (something that’s really come to light since then, but was new and unthinkable to me then), and that I liked the PLO guy because he was young and handsome and suave and pleasant and… Well, you get the picture. Major charming. My point is that the PLO has carefully laid the PR groundwork not only with the media, but on college campuses.

“Well, you get the picture. Major charming. My point is that the PLO has carefully laid the PR groundwork not only with the media, but on college campuses.”

–no, i think the deal is that you were and probably still are swayed by b.s.

the problem with israel is not their pr engine. it’s that they frankly don’t even see the need for one. israel will do whatever the heck it pleases regardless what the rest of their allies or benefactors think.

that is their right of course and i don’t begrude them it. but the point that needs to be driven home is that israel is not necessarily on the side of the angels when it comes to the ongoing tumult in the middle east. they are equally to blame for the coninued violence and the u.s. should be clear that we hold them in that view; which is our STATED policy btw.

    and on pr, there’s this:

“…At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying “every time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don’t worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it.”

  5. Dagon, the link you give, FPP.CO.UK is the website of David Irving, the holocaust denier and genuine SOB. Is this your idea of a reliable source? I thought you were a fool before, Dagon, now I’m quite sure of it.

  6. nice catch zhombre,

that was merely the first link that came up that had the quote in it’s entirety.

there has been a huge effort to discredit this quote as a pro-palestine hoax but i was working at fox news channel at the time and it was verified as accurate by eyewitnesses on the spot.

this may be the case of something going down the memory but thanks again for the catch. i’ll be more careful with my sourcing in the future.

    peace

  7. israel will do whatever the heck it pleases regardless what the rest of their allies or benefactors think.

Remember what I said about Kofi Annan and his complaints about Israel bombing one of their observation posts, book? It applies to the bolded portion above.

One of the reasons why Israel does need a propaganda apparatus, and an effective competent one, is that Israel does not do whatever the heck it pleases regardless of what international opinion has decided in an arbitrary fashion.

I mentioned before about the lethality of what a point should have. If Israel just did whatever they wanted, akin to the plans I’ve described, Israel wouldn’t need a propaganda apparatus because they would BE the propaganda apparatus. Their actions would make their point for them, with no need for some group of people to touch up the message to make it sharp.

Of course Israel is not on the side of the angels. Are not the UN miasma still alive by the grace of Israeli mercy? No Angel of Vengeance, would allow such a thing as the UN on their territory.

  8. I give a damn what you source or from where. I am too old and irascible to suffer fools gladly. I think you are shallow and supercilious and won’t waste my time reading or responding to you in the future.

Signing off with “peace” is insipid, unless you are a 14 year old girl and that’s rather young to be working at Fox.

  9. Hi Z,

I’m the first to ask Dagon to be civil and I’m now asking you to be civil to him as well. He made a mistake, he admitted to the mistake and said he’d be more careful in the future. Please let it go. By the way, I think Dagon says supercilious and shallow things to get a rise out of people, but I do not think he, himself, is actually supercilious or shallow at all. Rather than jumping on him, let’s try to get him to talk with us more seriously. Maybe we (or he) will learn something. DQ

  10. I learn more from talking to Brit, Dagon’s for others to observe.

  11. Those who admire the nature of the English language should look carefully at the oratory of Abba Eban. During my youth he was the model for many Americans. I think several LP’s were made of his work. (I’ve seen them at used LP shops in the past.)

It’s hard to recall exactly the nature of the recordings.

One would not employ the cliche ‘silver-tongued.’ ..Perhaps clarion toned? I do know his declamations dominated the UN stage at a decisive time. His mastery certainly gladdened all English speaking peoples.

  12. DQ: comments noted. Your efforts to maintain civility are appreciated and I will so comport myself in the future.

  13. Zhombre needs to meditate more in a Zen state.

  14. Zhombre, thanks. I knew you were a good soul.

  15. Bookworm, re: your update. What astonishes me (I know it shouldn’t, but it does) is that people could react to the bogus Sharon quote in any way other than “so what?”. If Sharon actually thought he in particular and the Jewish people more generally controlled America, that could only mean he had a problem with reality, not that Jews control America. Last time I checked, nobody controlled America, although certain leaders of political parties and lots of bureaucrats and judges and activist groups appear to be trying… 😉

Zhombre, Although you might have chosen your words a bit more carefully, I appreciate having a gentleman such as yourself standing beside me. Thank you.
