Sliding down the slippery slope

The following is from a Reuters news article. Here's a paragraph from about two-thirds into the article:

The Netherlands, which already has liberal policies on soft drugs, prostitution and gay marriage, was shocked by the plan.

Here's the issue that so shocked the Dutch:

Dutch pedophiles are launching a political party to push for a cut in the legal age for sexual relations to 12 from 16 and the legalization of child pornography and sex with animals, sparking widespread outrage.

I freely admit that the slippery slope argument is a bit silly because just about anything that is appropriate can also be taken to illogical extremes. That is, the threat of a slippery slope is seldom a justification, on its on, to stop a proposed policy. However, some slopes are anticipatable (is that a word?) and I'm not surprised at the latest extreme in Holland.

UPDATE:  Here's an article about the slippery slope from the point of view of polygamy and its damaging effects on a functioning democracy.

  1. Strangely the one issue of “liberal policies” that isn’t mentioned is the Dutch (legal) attitude towards euthenasia. And that’s something that has really gone quite far down the slope.

  2. Sliding Down the Slippery Slope

Perhaps more liberals need to study dominoes as they fall; at least then the outrage might not happen in a vacuum without reflection.

  3. BW, my guess is that it is a word since the form sounds very familiar to me. So I looked it up at dictionary.com

That which can be anticipated, anticipatable.

Some slopes are steep than others. Things that produce self-reliance, individualism, and self-defense like America’s 2nd Ammendment has a very low slope. Things like euthanasia and legalized drugs and legalized gay marriage, has a very very steep slope. What is this, Cartessian math again?

  4. How low can they go? One reads things like this (and the Netherlands’ euthanasia policies) and one can’t help but wonder if they wouldn’t be better off under Islam. I guess that we will eventually find out the answer to that question, anyway. More and more Dutch may opt for Islam because there already seems to be such a deep spiritual void and the local Christians come across as ineffective enablers and appeasers.

  5. I’d actually posted on this topic yesterday myself. I think you’re right.

  6. They already are opting out for islam because of the deep spiritual void. French women and other women are converting to Islam because Islam has “discipline and order”.
