“if I am going to die then I would rather die like a man than a dog.”

It’s a truly dreadful story, but with a happy ending, because a man behaved like a man:

A millionaire yesterday told how he fought off three armed burglars who were holding a knife to his daughter’s throat, saying he “would rather die like a man than a dog”.

Bernard Dwyer, 51, was convinced he and his family were about to be killed so he chose to take on the men – hours after they had allegedly killed a restaurant owner, a court heard.

Mr Dwyer came to his 13-year-old daughter Aisling’s rescue after hearing her piercing screams for help, the Old Bailey was told.

Despite being threatened with a gun, stabbed three times in the head and beaten unconscious with a knuckle-duster, Mr Dwyer fought back as one of his attackers screamed “kill the b******”.

He managed to wrestle a gun from one of the masked raiders and chased them from his luxury home in Uxbridge, West London, in November 2006, the jury heard.

Yesterday, Irish-raised Mr Dwyer, a construction boss, faced two of the three men accused of the burglary.

Brothers Michael and Dean Atkins are also on trial for the murder of restaurant owner Helen Chung, 65, the day before the break-in.

A third man, Joseph Carty, committed suicide in his cell last year while on remand for both offences.

The court heard Mr Dwyer, Aisling, now 14, and his son Danny, 19, were asleep when three men burst in.

He said: “I heard people running up the stairs and Aisling screaming ‘Dad’. I had never heard screaming like that before. I knew something was clearly wrong.”

Mr Dwyer said he jumped from his bed and ran towards Aisling’s room but was confronted at the doorway. “There were three guys coming towards me,” he said.

“All masked, all covered with balaclavas, gloves, padded out, forensically aware.

“One man was holding a gun, waving it about, screaming menacingly.”

He said they attacked him after he agreed to show them where his safe was, one with a knuckle-duster.

Mr Dwyer said: “I took quite a few blows at that point.

“I have seen things on television and I have seen violent stuff but I have never seen this level of violence.

“I was being compliant and they were smashing and bashing me.”

Mr Dwyer was knocked unconscious for a few minutes and when he came round one man was holding a knife to Aisling’s throat and screaming: “I am going to cut your f****** daughter”.

Mr Dwyer said: “We were going to die anyway, that’s what I thought. I thought, if I am going to die then I would rather die like a man than a dog.”

Mr Dwyer pushed the weapon away before striking the attacker.

“I hit him several times, I hit him plenty. The man with the knuckleduster screamed ‘He’s fighting back the b******, kill the b******, he’s fighting back.'”

Mr Dwyer said he was stabbed three times in the head but managed to fight the raiders off and shut the bedroom door. But the men tried to push back in and they fought again, he said. “I have never used a weapon in my life and it was a great feeling.”  [Emphasis mine. –ed.]

“I grabbed the gun and bashed it across the knuckle-duster guy. Next thing is they took off and I chased them down the stairs.”

The raiders fled empty-handed, leaving Mr Dwyer with broken ribs and 30 cuts to his body and head.

  1. “but with a happy ending, because a man behaved like a man” You can’t say that! Is a man more loyal or brave than a dog? Than a woman?

  2. So, did the Brits prosecute Dwyer for harming the perps? Just asking.

  3. Ellie,
I won’t disparage the bravery of women; I work alongside many steadfast souls of both sexes. However, there is a difference (in a historic and social context) between a “man’s” bravery and a “woman’s” bravery. I think the women actually have it harder – men get adrenaline and endorphins; women historically just had the fellowship of others whose men had gone off to war.
“Dying like a man” is a phrase long in the vernacular; stop being a pendantic whiner and appreciate the language.
And good for him; appeasement doesn’t work on the micro level either.

SGT Dave – “Bravery is the act of recognizing fear and deciding that action is better than submission to that fear.”

  4. Remember that the UK has outlawed ALL privately owned handguns. How much protection did that provide to Mr Dwyer?

Thank goodness he was able to defend his family through sheer grit and determination.

It would be interesting to know if the perps had any previous criminal records.

  5. I’m surprised Mr. Dwyer wasn’t arrested for using excessive force and using a firearm.

  6. Men protect. Women nurture. Mr. Dwyer had “a great feeling” using what he thought was a weapon (apparently it was an imitation gun) in the act of protecting his family. The ultimate job of a parent.
Apparently the perps did have previous criminal records. One had been in prison prior to these events.
Hopefully, I’ll have the same response as Mr. Dwyer, if necessary.

  8. I hope for Mr. Dwyer’s sake that his skin isn’t paler than that of his attackers. If it is, he’s due for re-education.

  9. Good for Mr. Dwyer! Not all in the British Isles are laying down and whimpering for the government to help.

  10. Maybe if the British press will continue to report events of this sort, and in this same style…..MAYBE, I say, there is hope that the will come again, when one could be justly proud to be identified as a Brit.

    Say a prayer for them……

  11. The only weapon he needed was his own brain ordering his body to smash and mutilate his enemies.

“I was being compliant and they were smashing and bashing me.”

The myth that giving into violence and submitting will make you “safe” is just that, a myth the government and criminals use to keep you in line.

Mr Dwyer said he was stabbed three times in the head but managed to fight the raiders off and shut the bedroom door. But the men tried to push back in and they fought again, he said. “I have never used a weapon in my life and it was a great feeling.“ [Emphasis mine. –ed.]

Man, that could have came straight from Target Focus Training as an example on how getting hit and cut doesn’t mean you have been “injured” and thus incapable of using violence.

I really really wanted in on some of that action, after reading this. 3 boyos against one middle age man? Trying to cut the throat of a little girl? I wouldn’t even have had to maintain any of the limitations on lethal force. You feel much lighter when the only thing you have to think about is injuring and killing the other guy.

These three went kind of wild. They needed to be shut down. It would have been an honor to guard Dwyer’s back.

Criminals these days lack quality and training. I tell ya. Where do they recruit them from anyways.

To quote something from the bible or a scholar, “my strength is as the strength of ten, because my heart is pure”.

That and the fact that learning correct striking dynamics, using your entire bodyweight, also makes your strikes as powerful as the strikes of ten men combined.

If someone wants to do their community a service, protect their loved ones, and throw out trespassers, they need go get some Target Focus Training. To recap, just because you have been “hit” and “smashed”, doesn’t mean you have been injured. It doesn’t mean you cannot fight back. Just the same, the same applies to the Three Thugs here. Just because you kick them or throw them down or whatever, doesn’t mean they have been injured and rendered incapable of functioning.

You don’t want to know how strong, fast, or skilled the other guy is. He may be stronger than you, he probably is if he is in his 20s and you are 51. All of that goes out the window when you injure him. The biggest thug in the history of the world could be wielding an axe, a falx, and 15 throwing daggers strewn about his harness, all of that stuff becomes useless when you put your elbow +150 pounds of force, into his trachea and wind wipe.

You ain’t going to be getting back up after that.

The man with the knuckleduster screamed ‘He’s fighting back the b******, kill the b******, he’s fighting back.’”

As a fringe benefit, you also don’t have to wear wack stuff coming out the mouths of your enemies when you crush his throat. Makes things much more peaceful, if you ask me.

TFT isn’t about techniques though. There are plenty of targets on the human body. Anatomical targets that thugs don’t have the brains to learn or retain. Hit the target, then focus on another target, and the human body gets disintegrated piece by piece.

You can either wait until the Three Thugs get tired of caving your skull in and slitting your children’s throats, or you can… give back some of that lovely violence, as a gift.

If you are a gracious host, then do your house guests not deserve the very best from you?
