Democratic front runner to be immune from attack

This is a developing story on Drudge:

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer has been warned not to focus Thursday’s Dem debate on Hillary. ‘This campaign is about issues, not on who we can bring down and destroy,’ top Clinton insider explains. ‘Blitzer should not go down to the levels of character attack and pull ‘a Russert.” Blitzer is set to moderate debate from Vegas, with questions also being posed by Suzanne Malveaux… Developing…

So, if I understand this correctly, because the front runner is a girl, she cannot be subject to political scrutiny.

Somehow I highly doubt whether, in a fraught world, Americans want a leader and commander in chief who is afraid to tangle with the big boys.  It scares holy heck out of me to think that someone with that wimpy, defeatist, I-am-a-helpless-victim attitude might become the leader of the free world.  It will be Jimmy Carter all over again, except with a level of financial corruption that was never a Carter trademark during his presidency.

  1. Whoa, Bookworm! Where does the news story talk about gender? I read it as saying that the debate organizers don’t want the debate to be all about Hillary, they want it to be about the issues. Isn’t that what any good debate should have?

  2. You’re right about what it says, Ophi, but I plead the fact that I read it with historical context in mind: which is that the Hillary campaign complained that it was unfair for Russert to bully her (which he did by asking her to explain her position on certain issues), and that Wolf is now being urged not to be a Russert. In context, therefore, it sounds as if the warning isn’t to stick to issues, but is to be nice to Hillary.

In any event, to the extent Hillary is a front runner, I think she’s fair game for any piling on. That’s what happens when you’re in the lead and others are out to get you. I’d say that same thing about any front runner.

  3. Ophi – The only one who has made Hillary’s sex an issue is Hillary’s mouthpieces. The warning issued doesn’t refer to sex, and doing so would be really stupid. It is nearly as stupid to say, “Hey, don’t beat up on the leader.” Does anyone actually expect Edwards and Obama to not attack Hillary? She is whom they have to beat. In fairness, a moderator should not play favorites. That doesn’t mean he has to be nice to anyone. As long as he treats everyone the same, there can be no objection.

  4. This sounds to me like a shot fired across Wolf Blitzer’s and CNN’s bows, saying in effect, “Back off or we will attack!” It will be interesting to see if they do back off.

  6. Do people actually think Hillary is a lesbian?

Probably. I have long advised that Bush use intimidation, anti-sedition, and crackdowns on the media. It is far more effective, in the end, than playing defense.

  8. And, in support of your position, Book, an insightful article on Hillary’s treatment of the press, found in the very left-wing New Republic:

  9. Eliot Spitzer has announced he will no longer seek drivers’ licenses for illegal aliens. Could this be at least in part due to pressure from the Clinton campaign so she will no longer have to answer questions about it?

  10. Banana Republic indeed.

  11. YM, I note your link to the story on Hillary’s planted questions at campaign rallies. Who writes her questions? Aren’t the Hollywood writers on strike?

  12. Those who work for Hillary don’t have Union protection, Danny.
