When a society, as a whole, has given up any thought of life beyond physical existence, it becomes jaded and cynical, unable to conceive of the transcendent truths that once fueled its people. Europe has abandoned its Christian past, only to find that it has nothing to replace it with, except for empty pleasure in today. Somewhat surprisingly, the Muslim world is the same, due to their fatalism, which comes from Allah being both untouchable and omnipotent. Neither society seems to have much hope for this world beyond what they can take from it, the Europeans because they see no future beyond it, and the Muslims because they have no hope in this world of anything better than their current bad lot.

England has attained Anthony Burgess' vision as expressed in his "A Clockwork Orange". They have become sheep...a ready sacrifice to the wolves that must not be named. I, for one, mourn the passing of the British lion and hope that, somewhere, his offspring are preparing to reawaken the British spirit. I am not optimistic.
