Israel’s Scylla and Charybdis

In a very depressing article, P. David Hornik details the relentless war the jihadists are waging against Israel, with more and more rocket attacks, resulting in the dislocation of entire communities, and a slow, but steady, rise in the number of injuries and deaths. Hornik also points out that Israel’s response has been extremely narrow, aimed at trying to kill the heads of the Jihadist hydras. From these facts, Hornik reaches a depressing conclusion:

But most of all, Israel fears that stronger military action in Gaza will result in Palestinian civilian casualties—and it knows that this, and not the six-year siege of Sderot, is the one thing the world will not tolerate.

It appears, then, that the Islamic reconquest of Palestine is under way and, as of this moment, succeeding. The driving force behind the reconquest is Iran, with Egypt helping by enabling a steady stream of terrorists and weaponry into Gaza, SyriaSaudi Arabia by providing ideological and financial backing. by giving various forms of support, and Israel, for its part, is on the verge of becoming a failed state part of whose territory is no longer under its control, unable to provide security to citizens there who are helplessly under attack and fleeing.

Iran and its friends are undoubtedly enjoying the spectacle. They are, after all, confronting the West—in the form of Israel; Palestinians in other places like Lebanon don’t count. and the other Western countries that supposedly sympathize with the fact that even its non-“occupying” civilians are under attack. This dhimmified West has internalized the principle that Palestinian life is the one thing that is sacred—that is, the lives of Palestinians in conflict with

But rather than see Palestinians in the former category even endangered, the West’s learned reaction is to prefer to see Israel decline into mayhem.

Israel cannot win for losing. If she wants to remain buddy-buddy with the West, she must sacrifice her own population.  Of course, since she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t, I’d go after the jihadists wherever they are, and to Hell with European “moralizers.”  As it is, since I’ll give Israeli leaders credit for not being too stupid (although, lately, that’s giving them a lot of credit), I have to assume that what’s really holding them back is America, which has almost certainly issued warnings saying that, if Israel goes after the Palestinians where they live, she will lose access to necessary weapons.

And, since the US suddenly reopened talks with Iran (on Memorial Day, no less), she must be getting nervous that, even if she behaves “well” (that is, even if she lets her citizens die so terrorists can live), she’s about to lose her one source of constant support.

  2. [...] In the preceding post, I professed to being very depressed about P. David Hornik’s take on the situation in Israel. Sometimes, though, if you keep reading, you can find things that will lift your spirits, at least a little bit. Today, that something is Fjordman’s article about Europeans perhaps waking up and smelling the jihadist coffee, something he believes occurred, not because of bombs, but because of cartoons: During the height of the Muhammad cartoons crisis, Fjordman was among the minority who thought this was good news for Europe and the West. Although it may sound absurd to Americans, those rather innocent cartoons may have done more to open the eyes of Europeans to the Islamic threat than the terror attacks of 9/11, the London and Madrid bombings combined. People who can burn down embassies because of something so silly quite simply don’t have anything at all in common with us, and cannot function in our democratic societies. Muslims may have pushed too far, too early, and thus jolted some life back into even the near-comatose continent of Europe. I see some signs that this interpretation may have been correct, and that the tide is indeed changing. Recent opinion polls indicate that there is now a critical mass of ordinary Europeans who no longer buy the brainwashing about Islam being a peaceful religion. [...]

  4. It has been said,by better writers than me, that Israel is the canary in the coal mine and it seems that the noose is tighter than ever. That there are so many similarities to the 1930’s is even more alarming. I can’t help but believe that all hell is about to let loose.
