Dog bites man

Before seeing this Hot Air Vent video (linked at Michelle Malkin), I’d never heard of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom. Theirs is an absolutely horrifying story: a young man and woman carjacked at random, gang-raped, tortured and murdered. The details are stomach churning, giving us a look into the heart of irredeemably evil people. Given the “if it bleeds, it leads” and the “there are no more local story” paradigms that permeate the modern media, this murder ought to have dominated the headlines. As I noted, however, I’d never heard about those poor souls.

Michelle Malkin’s video makes the point that not a single major media outlet picked up the story. She then asks why, and comes up with the answer: The Christian/Newsom case is not a politically useful murder. It’s not about whites victimizing blacks (especially rich whites and poor blacks), as was the case with the false charges in the Duke rape story; it’s not about a white on black hate crime in a Southern state putting forward a potential Republican presidential candidate, as was the case with James Byrd in Texas; nor is about the straight-on-gay murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. Each of those fit in a nice media/liberal paradigm about victims and malfeasors.

I’d go one step further than Malkin in explaining the media silence. All of us are familiar with some variation of the age old newspaper aphorism: dog bites man is not a story; man bites dog is. While the media gulps up the Duke rape, James Byrd and Matthew Shepard stories because of their political heft, they’re also newsworthy to the American public precisely because they’re so unusual. The fact is, white men don’t go around raping black women and, in today’s America, while people may still be racists and homophobes, racially and homophobically motivated murders rarely happen — that’s why they’re all newsworthy, and why the public tolerates it as the media plays them for all they’re worth. To the public, they’re fascinating as man bites dog cases; to the media, they help make political points. Everybody’s happy.

Sadly, however, if one ignores the illusion created by air time, black on black, and black on white crime, are still normative. Whether they’re on the committing end or the receiving end of murder, American blacks top the charts, with blacks being murdered at 6 times the rate of whites, and blacks committing those murders at 7 times the rate of whites. (These are 2004 statistics.)

The rate of black victimization is a whole area in itself, because while the press is moaning about the rare white on black crime, the fact is that blacks are mostly being victimized by predators in their own communities. (Over an 18 year period, 94% of black victims were killed by fellow blacks.) This is appalling. The dominant culture is utterly failing to protect its black citizens from violent crime. I strongly believe that this failure comes from the fact that predators are given a free hand by the liberal policy that excuses them their sins because of their race.

What all of the above means is that, whether the victims are white (less common) or black (more common), reporting on the Christian/Newsom story, and other stories like it, would force the liberals to face the fact that their rich, straight, white male crime spree is a complete fantasy. Doing that isn’t just politically inconvenient, it attacks an article of faith, which is that rich, straight, white males are evil, and that everyone else, in some way or another, is a victim of that evil.

Aside from representing really bad reporting, the media’s three monkeys attitude has very grave consequences. By ignoring the evil that really exists, the media fails to allow America effectively to address and correct it. Plastering papers and TV with the rare crimes that fit a political agenda means that society is incapable of engaging in the type of dialogue that would enable it to focus on the real victims — those blacks trapped in neighborhoods where small numbers of violent young men (accompanied by a handful of equally violent young women) have unleashed a type of savagery that ought never to exist in a civilized country.

UPDATE:  I just discovered that, in California, I’m the minority now.  What the heck is going to happen to all the liberal paradigms with white people legitimately claiming minority status?

  1. In response the killing of Matthew Shepard, the NY Times launched “The Laramie Project” as if the place he was killed was somehow responsible.

The year Shepard was killed do you know how many hate crimes were reported in the state of Wyoming?

    3.

Per capita it was a lot less than the number reported in California.

(Source the FBI’s uniform report on hate crimes.)

  3. You’re a thoughtful person, kiddo - you’re in the minority anywhere in this country.

  4. If news is whatever rarity you choose to report on, Book, then isn’t news just propaganda by another name? And propaganda is only worthwhile to the propagandist. I think you covered that in your conclusion.

  5. One of the reasons why Jihadists aren’t scared of America and blew up those people on 9/11, is because Americans themselves don’t have a full grip on lawlessness in their country. Because the criminals are not as scared of American justice as they should be. And this doesn’t just apply to child molestors either. If you let justice and punishment slide, what tends to happen is that it starts growing. Not just in your country, but outside of your country as well.

Nobody is invulnerable. Learning how to kill evil and learning how to become stronger so as to obtain the courage and skills to even face evil, is not something the media or Hollywood wants people to learn. And the reason is simple. Those who have power become very hard to manipulate and control, and to Hollywood and the rest of the elites, the entire world is their playground.

  6. Meta-Golden is very necessary to sort of wash out all the murky ethical dilemmas people talk about. Death vs life imprisoned then death. 25 years in prison then death vs life in prison then death.

Or even about evil vs good, how we’re not evil and we should not become evil, except evil people aren’t afraid of good people. Do violent people fear non-violent people? And are violent people inherently more evil than non-violent people?

See, all these questions without answers, mostly cut through by the Meta-Golden Rule.

  7. In addition to being a “man bites dog” story, the Duke “rape” story had far more potential for provoking outrage than did the Christian/Newsom rape/murder.

Consider that in the Duke case, black leaders were able to re-ignite outrage among blacks against whites for past wrongs. And feminist leaders were able to fan the flames of outrage against males. And liberal intellectuals were able to apologize once again on behalf of their fellow whites. And conservative writers could stimulate outrage among their subscribers for the outrageus statements made by the blacks and feminists and liberal intellectuals. It was better than a professional wrestling match. It needed only for the accuser to be lesbian to be complete.

Contrast that with the Christian/Newsom story. What happened to Channon Christian and Chris Newsom was by any measure way beyond outrageous. It was a vile act almost beyond comprehension, and yet what white leaders in their right minds would use it to provoke outrage of whites against blacks? They’d be dead meat in nanoseconds. And since it appears that one of the perpetrators was female and one of the victimes male, how could it be used by feminists to increase hatred for men? Lacking the opportunity to provoke outrage among those who like to perceive themselves as victims against those whom they like to perceive as their oppressors, the Christian/Newsom story had no “legs”.

    And that’s a terrible shame.

  8. I’m originally from the Knoxville, TN area and have been following this horrific murder case since shortly after it occurred. It is criminal that it hasn’t received any media attention outside of the local area. Something similar happened in the Wichita murders of 5 whites by two african american brothers. It happened 5 or 6 years ago and never received any publicity beyond the local media either.

  9. I still prefer man bites dog… :-)

  10. The real problem is that these facts about black crime, whether they are broadcast or not, are known to most people. Any stereotypes of blacks as criminals or moral inferiors is reinforced by the statistics. When the press bemoans the fact that most of prison inmates are minorities, a large section of the public thinks, gee, I already knew that they were losers, guess I was right.

The constant claiming of victim status by black “leaders” is also harmful, for the same reasons.

When you don’t fight for Justice, a lot of things tend not to have legs that ought to have.

  12. The horror story the MSM still won’t tell us about

A subject still very worthy of discussion is the savage murder of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian, a white couple who were murdered by a black gang in Knoxville, Tennessee. Michelle Malkin did a podcast about it a few weeks ago (read also he…
