  1. It was interesting to see the facial expressions fade in and out. Like seeing two personalities or two layers of reality. The person behind the joke so to speak.

  2. Thanks so much for this, Book…..for those of us “of a certain age”, this is really special.

When comedy was king! These guys could tell dirty jokes…and probably did – in the locker room. In public, parents didn’t have to cringe at the blue or scatalogical language assaulting their kids.

I remember when it started on radio in the Bay Area — one month my 12-year old son and I could listen to sports talk together without discomfort…..and then, little by little the “locker-room language” started creeping onto the public airwaves.

What is left to say in the locker-room in order to feel “grown-up” anymore? When the “Marine’s favorite word” is being spouted by college girls on TV or in the Mall, how do young boys feel “edgy” while still being safe? I think the answer is that they don’t — so we have a coarser society in which young men have to do dangerous things to get the same thrill that my friends and I did by saying dirty words.

    And this is progress……?

  3. Civilizations always progress towards entropy, it is inevitable. What isn’t is whether people choose to resist or not.
