Watcher’s rewards the best, yet again

Every week, like clockwork, the Watchers of Weasels vote and make sure you get the chance to read the best articles written by members of the Watcher’s council, and by others out in the blogosphere. This week, the two most highly rated articles written by council members are Eternity Road’s first place Serving While Republican, which looks at the appalling double standard the media has for Republican and Democratic politicians, and Joshuapundit’s second place What Are Europe’s Options?, which talks about the increasingly limited range of options for a Europe facing creeping Islam within its borders.

Incidentally, with regard to Eternity Road’s article, it is worth pointing out that the press has always taken pleasure in ferreting out Democratic, as well as Republican scandals. It’s simply that, in the wake of the scandals, the press tends to be more blood-thirsty for the Republicans than for the Democrats (witness Scooter Libby’s treatment in the press versus Sandy Berger’s).

As for articles from sources other than the Watcher’s Council, first place goes to Sigmund, Carl and Alfred’s Tenured Deceit, a clear-eyed look at a sleazy L.A. Times Op-Ed questioning Israel’s right to exist, and second place to Right Wing Nation’s Tips For New Teachers, the title of which is self-explanatory.

As I say every week, and will undoubtedly say every week to come, these are superb articles and well worth the enjoyable time spent reading them.  Congratulations, all!

He had an interesting thing to say.

My rank speculation is that Sandy Berger had information which would have made his trial even more painful for the Bush administration than for, well, Berger. I have no idea what that information would have been, except perhaps more detailed evidence that some Clintonite somewhere “warned” the Bush administration about al Qaeda or the specific tactics deployed on 9/11. Or perhaps Berger’s defense would have required that the administration compromise information of current tactical or intelligence value, in which case the trial of Sandy Berger would have hurt the United States. Either way, it seems to me silly to complain about Libby’s treatment compared to Berger’s without knowing why we let Berger off with the equivalent of after-school detention.

The next question of course is, why don’t we know? This is a mystery that begs for investigation by the best reporters in the Washington press corps. That our vaunted mainstream media has failed to uncover the story of Berger’s absurd sentencing reflects very poorly on their ambition, their competence, or their objectivity.
