I couldn’t let Rose Mattus’ death pass unnoticed. Who is she, you ask? Only one of the people who made the world or, at least, my world, a much, much better place:
Rose Mattus, who launched Haagen-Dazs ice cream with her husband, peddling the super-premium treat in grocery stores, has died. She was 90.
Mattus died Tuesday, according to Gutterman-Musicant Funeral Directors in Hackensack.
Mattus, who lived in Cresskill, N.J., had been the controller of Haagen-Dazs Inc. Her husband, Reuben Mattus, died in 1994.
The company was formed around 1960, having morphed from her husband’s family’s decades-old business in New York City’s Bronx borough. Reuben Mattus concocted the nonsensical name Haagen-Dazs, which means nothing in any language, for the brand that became famous for its super-rich recipes.
During the company’s early years, Rose Mattus would offer samples in grocery stores.

It’s nice of you to mark her passing. I remember blogging about the death of the woman who had been matriach of the In-n-Out burger restaurants for many years. But Haagen-Daz is a national brand, and I don’t think In-n-Out has expanded beyond California, Arizona, and Nevada.
I do like those rich ice creams, just as you do.
I always thought Haagen-Daz was Dutch or something. I once ate a tank (circ gallon) of ice cream at once. Took about 3 or 4 sittings.

It was a bleak day indeed when our nearby HD parlor closed. I’ve been questing ever since for another place to get my ice cream fix and have settled on Coldstone Creamery, or I make it myself. I’ve been known to bury it in the freezer under the vegetables.
It’s a little creepy, we were discussing bad habits just today and one friend said his was Haagen Dazs Strawberry and mine was Haagen Dazs Chocolate-Chocolate Chip! We must have felt her presence near!
Strawberry is Mark’s favorite.
Mine is anything chocolaty and chunky.
We get it for under $3.75 a pint at the local supermarket on shopping day, or close to $4 at the local 7-11 for those “gotta have it” moments.
And we were just talking about it today in the live chatroom during our show today! What a coincidence.
