Those who cut their political teeth on Howard Zinn's <i>A People's History of the United States</i>, and thus can find no good thing to say about our country, simply cannot differentiate between "safer" and "safe". The utopians want utopia, where we'll all be safe with no effort expended. The fact that al Qaeda is is severely damaged, Saddam Hussein's safe haven and terrorist funding is gone, etc., just doesn't register. It will <i>never</i> register to those whose lives are ruled by Bush Derangement Syndrome.
