Gil Troy writes an enormously uplifting article about Israel’s victory, both in Lebanon and at home. I won’t summarize. You should read it yourself.

JERUSALEM, Aug. 21 — A group of reservist soldiers, angry about the conduct of the war in Lebanon, carried out a protest today demanding the resignations of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and the army chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz.”

Dagon, cynicism kills.
Look to the bright side of life. You’ll live longer and happier.
mamapajamas,
i’m not cynical. i just live in the real world so farcical nonsense about ‘israel’s triumphant victory’ tends to raise my hackles.
peace
There’s one test of whether someone lives in the real world, and that’s to see who can better survive via their plan and beliefs, alone, or with like minded peeps.
Dagon can claim to be in the real world with words to the end of time, but it’s not going to solve anything, mama. WHich is perhaps the point.
One other point. Bookworm has written about the divide and conquer strategy that has been effective since the beginning of time amongst human affairs (Adam and Eve, Adam and God). Hang together or hang separately.
Specifically, Dagon could have said something to the effect that it would be best for Israel to accomplish their goals X and Z, and that because they failed, this is a failure. But what Dagon did was to attempt to create divisiveness amongst the Israelis, by pitting one faction against the other, and then pointing to it and saying “see, I was right”.
Israeli factions fighting together is an example of the success of divide and conquer strategies. No matter who you are or how powerful or successful you are, you cannot beat the odds when surrounded.
If you can beat the Arabs, then they’ll get France against you, if you can beat the Arabs and France, then they’ll get the Soviets. If you can beat even a superpower, then you still fail because they cooked up some internal dissent about reservists calling for Olmert’s resignation.
A spider, sitting in her web, pulling the strings of the world, only going forth when the victim is completely helpless.
Dagon… uh, excuse me, but you ARE cynical. I have yet to see you make any comment here that adds to the possible solutions, as Ymarsaker pointed out. You are always working to tear down.
Your every post here seems to work at finding the cloud in front of every silver lining. My philosophy is the total opposite… I find the good in every bad situation. There is something there that is useful, always, even if it only serves as a learning experience.
And why did I say, “Cynicism kills”??? Because it does. It will tie you in knots, releasing “fight or flight” enzymes that will eat you alive. Working at finding the bad in every situation is exactly what I’m talking about.
I am the survivor of a 3rd stage cancer that I should not have survived, according to my doctors. My treatments were set up to make me comfortable in my last days, not to cure me. But I AM cured. By all medical accounts, I should not be here.
When I asked my doctors what makes a difference, to a man they said, “Attitude.”
When all of the hard medical evidence points to a fatal end of the disease, of those who nevertheless survive the difference is in their attitude. Any oncologist will tell you this.
So straighten up and fly right.

–that is terrific about your recovery. as someone who has had to deal with terminal diagnoses for 2 of my closest family members, i applaud anyone who has had not only the will to endure such an emotionally wrenching event but also the dirve to overcome it and persevere.
that said, what does any of that have to do your ‘assessment’ that i am cynical? that is your opinion…that is all. i’ve got plenty of them to too. i think bookworm and the pluratity of the gaggle that frequents here are war-apologists and anachronisms who, unless their worldviews are repudiated in the popular lexicon and their political capital invalidated, will lead this nation to ruin; and i’m a fairly laid-back guy if you knew me personally, just not about politics.
see, that’s how far opinions will get you.
seriously though, i applaud you on your recover and wish you the very best health.

Dagon, you are indeed a cynic. You will have it only that your opinion is right, and that anyone who puts a happier face on things is absolutely wrong. You believe that my point of view will ruin the country, when the fact is that it is the liberal view that has done the most damage in the last 40 years. Some good things have come of it, but a large morass of new problems were created. That is simply a fact of the history of the country. You are going far out of your way to ignore a reality that is extemely important. Further, even as you go on about differences of opinion, you stated, in your own words, that you regard me as a threat, “…unless their worldviews are repudiated in the popular lexicon and their political capital invalidated, will lead this nation to ruin;”, while I regard liberals as people with a difference of opinion. Your fear that we will lead the country to ruin is a theory, not a fact of the nation’s history. You are putting us all down over a theory. I can’t think of anything more cynical than that.
What I went on about my cancer recovery for is that there is a great deal of wisdom to be found in what oncologists are discovering about attitude that can be applied to much more than just cancer. The old, “Don’t worry, be happy” was trivialized by that stupid song a few years ago, mainly because it suggests a “head in the sand” attitude. What I’m saying is, “Don’t worry… take action.” DO, don’t sit around complaining. During the year I took my cancer treatments, I had no more than 3 weeks total off work, a day here and a day or two there plus a one-week vacation, all adding up to three weeks. I stayed busy, and most important, stayed upbeat.
that said, what does any of that have to do your ‘assessment’ that i am cynical? that is your opinion…that is all.
Since mama’s opinions are backed by fact, it elevates it from base opinion to true justified beliefs.
Good arguments doesn’t hurt either.
If Dagon doesn’t care much for opinions, then does that include his own? You have to ask and consider that. If he discounts mama’s opinions and believes them to be untrue, does he hold the same for his often stated and self-disclosed opinion about Bookworm and Co? Or is it more complex, does Dagon believe his opinions are golden while others are untrue vis a vis the premise that Dagon is the justified party?
Sometimes you need logic to at least attempt to make your arguments coherent. Dagon perhaps needs some remedial lessons on how to construct an argument that doesn’t fall apart at first glance. Even with an incoherent argument, logic can help untangle the web people weave.

see, that’s how far opinions will get you.
Here’s an alternative universe in which we get to change events in the time-stream. Let’s say instead of Dagon here cleverly justifying his position with an ad hominem argument tieing together his beliefs about who people are with the effects opinions have on mama, Dagon in fact argues why he is not a cynic. The methodology would be simple, he would only have to say what he believes a cynic to be, demonstrate through action or reference that his behavior and beliefs are inconsistent with that of cynicism, and therefore invalidate the claim that Dagon is a cynic.
Of course we live in a single stream quantum world, where we can only see one phase of an object as it comes into existence, not both at the same time, we get Dagon talking about who other people are in order to defend himself as being a non-cynic.
Let’s not get into the other tertiary effects like where opinions have gotten Dagon in terms of realism and true characterizations. We’ll save that for later.

–did i ever say it was a fact? it’s an opinion and it is no more indicative of a cynical personality than bookworm’s daily post demonizing ‘the left’ or your dutiful ‘me-twoisms’ whenever she posts anything negative about the inherent widkedness or divisiveness of liberal thought. too funny!

Keep going mama, if you want a head ache. But there are other things to read.
Dagon once said he’d ignore me. After some brutal hits he was unable to defend, he seems now willing finally to make good on his promise.
