There’s more and more talk lately of a UN peacekeeping force going in to put a fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Now, Putin is chiming in to say he might help out with this. I sure hope that Israel, who has less reason than any nation in the world to trust the UN, doesn’t fall for this. Hezbollah is a boil that needs to be lanced. The worst thing that could happen would be to have the corrupt, anti-Semitic, inept UN move in place to prop up Hezbollah while it recovers from the damage Israel has already inflicted against it.

Given the history of UN “peace-keeping forces,” this is a really terrible idea.
Factor in the history of Vladimir Putin as an ex-KGB thug who has little-to-no interest in either democracy or the security of Israel – it becomes a terrible idea.
It should also be noted that the deployment of “peace-keeping” forces ought to somewhere involve the concept of there being a “peace” to be kept. There is no peace here, and the history of UN forces when there are guns pointed in their general direction is not inspiring: they generally run, rather than actually shoot back and fight to establish the missing peace.
UN peace-keeping forces have been dicking around in Kosovo for seven years now – anybody see any peace? Two years ago they broke out their binoculars to bird-watch, turning their backs on the mobs of Albanians who were burning down Serbian Christian churches – and incidentally killing Serbians.
In 1967 they were “guarding” Israel’s border with Egypt – until Nasser asked them to leave, which they did, thereby opening up Israel’s southeastern border.
They have a long history of not fighting. A long history of running away.
They would contribute absolutely nothing – not even a false sense of security anymore – to the establishment or maintenance of “peace.” The best they could do would be to be in the way.
But I have to admit: the blue helmets are kind of cool…
The blue helmets make great targets for American snipers.
Putin wants to get paid for sending his military to rack up kill counts. That’s kind of obvious, given Putin’s inability to crush the Chechnyan resistance even though their supply lines are like zero compared to America’s supply chain with Iraq and Afghanistan.
Russia’s military is weak, and Putin knows it. Might as well take some cushy job where the UN pays him big moola. Great way to still act like a World Power.
