Neither of my children understands what a joke is. They mangle them, they make up decidedly unfunny stories, and they yell a lot about the failure of the other child's joke. Out of all this, though, my son inadvertently came up with something funny That is, after I thought about it quite a while, I realized he did a good job of standing a genre on its head. Here it is: "A man walked into a bar and said . . . ouch!"

It’s such fun watching the kids funny-bones develop. Thor’s (silent “h”) first came when we were playing with “Knock-knock” jokes. Hopefully everyone knows these – here is his punchline: “Thor your grandson, but I fixed him with scotch tape!” I forget just how old he was, but we sure heard it a lot for a while. Kids are SUCH fun……..
Funny. Sort of sad, however, that it took me awhile to get it.
It took me a minute to get it too because, like you, I read Thor the regular way even though the pronunciation guide was given as “Tore.”
I loved that one when Incredible Daughter Number 3 told it to me several years back. I admit; I looked at her with a blank face for a moment, then got it.
My favorite, though, was a few years earlier when she was maybe 3, and I was talking to her on the phone. She dropped the receiver, picked it up and asked breathlessly, “Daddy, are you all right?” I know it’s not technically a joke, but it sure made me laugh.
Hi Bookworm,
I am getting caught up on some of your previous blogs and just had to comment on this one. As a mother, I have learned over the years to listen to what comes out of the mouths of our children. Sometimes it is funny and sometimes it just makes us say “Awwww” and feel all warm inside. For example, it was just before Christmas and my sons were ages 3 & 5 years. We stopped at the mall so the kids and their dad could get presents for me. I waited in the car while they did their shopping. When they got back, the kids were all excited, especially my youngest son.
I will never forget what he said. “I am not going to tell Mom about the wallet we got her.” there was a pause as he realized what he said and then “I am going to keep it a secret in my heart.” I didn’t say a word. I just looked at my husband and smiled with tears of pride and joy in my eyes. I haven’t told him of this to this day. I am waiting until he has children of his own. He will appreciate it then.
